Octo-Memory, a Halloween-themed memory game

Octo-Memory is a Halloween-themed memory game based on the same memory game by Sebastiano M. Cossu in the book Game Development with GameMaker Studio 2.

The game was developed entirely under Linux using tools running under Xubuntu Linux. The only time Windows was used was to create the Windows binary of the game. GameMaker Studio has a beta version that runs quite well under Linux, despite warnings of instability. I used Aseprite to create the animated card backs. Most of the card faces were created with Inkscape, then resized in GIMP, and brought into Aseprite to be put on the orange-coloured card fronts. The eyeball was created entirely under Aseprite.

One problem with the original game was a lack of a startup screen. The game started right away, as did the timer. This version adds a title screen when the game is launched, so the game and timer do not start right away.

Keen eyes will notice the current Linux AppImage is about 3 times the size of the Windows zip file. This is because I compiled the code on my laptop for a native YYC version. The Linux AppImage adds a small virtual machine to run the game under. I'm going to change this shortly to run natively, so the AppImage should get smaller. I'm just too beat this evening, and have an event tomorrow after work.

There are plans to add audio, some scoring, and better graphics in the near future.
