Back in business - new PSU
In the last update I mentioned that my computer occasionally spontaneously rebooted during stress loads. It seemed to happen a lot more often when I added a second monitor (but also happened before on a single monitor when I ran applications that stressed the CPU or GPU). The final straw came a few weeks back when I tried streaming Fasteroids development on Twitch and the computer rebooted when I tried running the code in GameMaker 2 Studio. This was the first time the code got corrupted and I had to pull the previous days work from my git repository.
A second random reboot during the development of Fasteroids one evening, again corrupting the game, stopped me completely from working on the game again. I had intended to code on my laptop last weekend, but "life happened" and I ended up holding off. Yesterday the weather in the evening was much better than during the day, so I ended up making it out to the computer store and picking up an EVGA 600W 80+ Bronze power supply. But by the time we got back home I was pretty exhausted from the full day at work and running around (we also went to a couple of other places) and I didn't bother putting in the power supply.
I really like my Antec Three Hundred Two case, but getting at that 8 pin (power) cable header on the motherboard (without removing the motherboard) was a real pain because of the honking big Cooler Master CPU cooler. The cooler was a real pain to put on (scissors-like mechanism that needs to sit just right - think it's an early Hyper Evo 212) so I didn't want to remove it just to get at the connector. Eventually I managed to remove the old PSU from the 8pin connector and put the new PSU in, but it took a lot more time that I would have imagined (next time I'll just unscrew the motherboard).
The good/great news is that the issue appears to have been the power supply. After changing to the new power supply I was able to do a short stream (20 minutes) without any kind of issues. I compiled Fasteroids in both GMS1 and 2 and ran it without any issues. Onward and Forward!
